Issues with Other Methods of Destruction
There are a number of methods various companies use to destroy computer media and it is important to be familiar with the pros and cons of the various methods before making a sound business decision. Note: We do not provide these services below.
Erasure – High-density electromagnets (degaussers) will generally erase or scramble the data written to your computer tape and hard drives. You must make sure, however, that the capability of the degausser selected matches the density of data held on each device to be degaussed, or this process is completely ineffective. Hard drive wiping or erasure software is very slow and expensive. Unless the hard drive is to be re-used internally, this tedious process is not absolute. One important factor remains, if any of the above methods of erasure are used … you still have the tape or hard drives on hand and they still must be disposed of through physical destruction or other means.
Off-Site Destruction – In this case a service provider will transport your tape and/or hard drives to his (or someone else’s) plant-based destruction facility for destruction, usually in batch mode with other clients’ media, but you can arrange to have yours processed separately. You will need to accompany the transport vehicle and/or meet it at their site in order to personally witness the destruction. Additionally, there are many security procedures, guarantees, transfer precautions, travel arrangements, time lines, and so forth that accompany the Off-Site destruction process so we cannot recommend this type of service.

Federal and State Laws govern most industries
FACTA – (Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act) protecting private individuals’ financial history

HIPAA – (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) pertaining to the safeguards and destruction of patient health records
History of Data Retirement
In the corporate environment these concerns touch many areas and departments including: Facilities, IT & IS, Security, Legal, as well as the top tier Management Team. The consequences for mis-handling, loss, or theft of confidential information are well documented and quite severe. Furthermore, penalties in terms of fines or sanctions from the government could pale in comparison to the lack of confidence expressed and loss of business from their client base or general public. You do not want to see your company’s name in the newspaper reporting incidents of mis-handling or mis-management of sensitive data.
Since the early 1960’s computer technology has enabled us to store vast amounts of data magnetically onto portable storage devices. Although many technologies have been introduced and marketed, Magnetic Tape and Hard Drives have survived to become by far the most common storage media. Cost per byte stored, ease and speed of recording and access, as well as the secure longevity of the data written onto these devices are all contributing factors.
